Hospital Admission
Monday, November 27, 2017, we got admitted to SickKids hospital in downtown Toronto (for more details on the history leading to this decision, please check the various pages under “Our Story”.
You could imagine our shock as parents when the metabolic doctor whom we just say 30 min ago and told us to go home, was waiting for us in the emergency and was making sure that our son was getting the right IV (Dextrose 10%);
The IV was needed to maintain his sugar level steady whether he eats or not;
From the emergency where we were still in shock and trying to understand the magnitude and gravity of the situation, they moved us upstairs into a common room (IV still on), where they provided us with a feeding schedule. Our son was mandated to eat every 2 to 2.5 hours and his meals consisted of a mix of soy milk formula, cornstarsh and solcarb. The cornstarsh is the ingredient which will be digested over time since it is a complex carb and it will take longer than usual food to be digested. The soy milk was there for the nutrition and since it is lactose free it was recommended to us instead of regular formula. Solcarb is a soluble form of powdered carbohydrate that can be added to tube feeding formulas, liquids or moist foods.
