Early Signs
My wife started noticing that our son’s belly is getting bigger back around February 2017 (our son was around 11 months old). On one of our routine visits to the pediatrician, we asked the doctor if our son was overweight, and based on the growth chart, he was a bit chubby but not overweight and it didn’t make sense to us that our son was wearing a diaper size bigger than what was recommended for his weight. So, we decided to wait for the next visit and revaluate the situation. Now that our son was over a year old, we were expecting him to start sleeping throughout the night while probably waking us one time or two times at most. We mentioned this to our doctor on our next visit and we told him that our son is waking us up every 3 to 4 ours and will only sleep if we give him milk and not water. So, the doctor suggested that maybe his belly is bigger than normal because of our son’s slightly elevated intake of milk and food. But my wife didn’t believe that his belly was enlarged because of the food and she insisted that we do an x-ray or ultrasound and see if something was abnormal. We did the first ultrasound in May 2017, and the result showed an enlarged liver;
In Summary, for us the signs were:
- enlarged belly which was caused by an enlarged liver.
- couldn’t sleep throughout the night, which was a sign that he was getting low on sugar and his body was asking for sugar hence why he was awake and crying 2 to 3 times at night, so we can feed him, so he gets his sugar and goes back to sleep.
- He will be in his car seat or stroller and sweating even with no prior activities; another sign of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar);
